ANTWONE FISHER Galas

“Initially, I wanted to tell my story because the opportunity presented itself and I was told that I could not do it…. It reminded me of how I was always told as a child that I was worthless and I would never accomplish anything in life.” – Antwone Fisher

A story of firsts, ANTWONE FISHER marks the directorial debut for Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, as well as the first screenwriting credit for Antwone Fisher. The film also stars newcomer Derek Luke in his first feature role.

A sailor with an explosive attitude, Fisher (Derek Luke) is ordered to see a naval psychiatrist (Denzel Washington) about his volatile temper. Little does he know that his first step into the doctor’s office will lead him on a journey home. With the support of the doctor-who becomes more like a father than anyone Fisher has ever known-and the woman (model-turned-actress Joy Bryant) from whom he learns how to love, Fisher finds the courage to stop fighting and start healing. Only then can he call upon the family he never knew and come to terms with the one he knew all too well.

Featuring stunning performances, ANTWONE FISHER is a testament to the power of the individual voice in the telling of a universal story. Fisher’s courage in facing down the monsters of his past fuels the narrative, forcing him to dig deep inside himself to uncover a king. Spirited and inspirational, ANTWONE FISHER is quite simply an extraordinary film .
