Motherly love takes on a whole new meaning in Sebastien Rose’s hilarious debut feature.
The mother of graduate student Jean Charles is like most mothers-loving, overly protective, eager for grandchildren-only Jean Charles’s mother is more so. She sleeps in the same bed as her grown daughter, befriends Jean Charles’s psychiatrist and seduces virtually every man within winking distance, including men whom she shares with her daughter. Though Norman Rockwell would hardly approve, this living arrangement suffices-until the arrival of Cassandre, Jean Charles’s first true love. Suddenly, Jean Charles’s family life is turned upside down, and he must confront a dilemma that’s older than the wisdom of Dr. Freud.
Singular and at the same time completely universal, HOW MY MOTHER GAVE BIRTH TO ME DURING MENOPAUSE stands apart, along with David O. Russell’s SPANKING THE MONKEY, on the frontiers of comedies about mothers who love their children a little too much.
