OLD, NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE (SE TIL VENSTRE, DER ER EN SVENSKER) International Feature Competition

Do we choose love or does love choose us? This spirited yet bittersweet romantic comedy makes an awfully strong case for the latter, with wonderful writing and vibrant performances from a game ensemble cast.

Forty-eight hours before her wedding, Katrine is a typically harried bride-to-be. There are the place cards to calligraphy for her over-bearing mother-in-law, the final dress fitting, the bachelorette party, finding the old, the new, the borrowed and the blue. And then there’s how to tell her institutionalized svicidal sister she’s getting married and how to deal with the reappearance of charming rogue Thomsen, whose sudden disappearance two years earlier drove her sister mad.

For all its modern themes, the heart of a classic screwball comedy beats here, with Sidse Bobett Knudsen and Bjorn Kjellman as crackling and chemically charged as Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in their day.
