Through interviews with collaborators Ulli Lommel, Hanna Schygulla and Michael Ballhaus, we learn much about Fassbinder’s method of working on his early films, We see how he was affected by the films of Douglas Sirk and how increasing worldwide acclaim made him question his cinematic future. We also hear from director Wim Wenders, who ruminates on Fassbinder’s career and on a memorable night they shared in Hollywood.

Here is a rare glimpse into the career of an influential filmmaker who once wrote an entire script on a 12-hour plane trip. Fassbinder’s fierce independence should serve as a rallying cry for all creative people.
