TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE Special Screenings

Acclaimed cinematographer Haskell Wexler is renowned for his genius and groundbreaking work. Winner of two Academy Awards®, his care is filled with classic films-WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, AMERICAN GRAFFITI and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST. He also wrote, produced and directed the brilliant MEDIUM COOL, a counterculture landmark filmed in the midst of Chicago’s 1968 Democratic Convention.

Haskell Wexler is also known for an renegade style people either love or hate . Reflecting on his career, Haskell, now 82, says, “I don’t think there’s movie that I’ve been on that I wasn’t sure I could direct better.” His son Mark’s documentary, TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE, is no exception. Mark S. Wexler is an award-winning photojournalist and documentarian. Yet, it is clear Haskell has little confidence in his son, the filmmaker. Father and son become dueling directors as Haskell goads Mark, reminding him that he, Haskell Wexler, is the “star of your fucking movie!”

TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE offers a glimpse into the private lives of Hollywood as a son attempts to understand and reconcile with his famous father. In an intimate interview with Jane Fonda, she relays to Mark that it always falls on the child to reconcile with the father before it’s too late. This profoundly moving biography is masterfully made by the other star of the film, and is universal in the insights of the emotional politics of father and son relationships.
