FATELESS (SORSTALANGSAG) European Film Showcase

Acclaimed Hungarian cinematographer Lajos Koltai makes his feature directorial debut with this superior and harrowing Holocaust drama based on the novel by Nobel laureate (and concentration camp survivor) lmre Kertesz.

The always incomprehensible events of the Holocaust are rendered all the more wrenching when seen through the essentially unsuspecting eyes of a child: Fourteen-year-old Gyurko (a profoundly affecting Marcell Nagy), the man of the house since his father was forced to report to a labor camp, is himself snatched from a bus on his way t? work and sent to Buchenwald. Utterly bleak in its depiction of the pitiless nature of survival, it’s also ultimately uplifting, carried by young Gyurka’s unshakeable belief that “there’s nothing too unimaginable to endure.” Hungary’s official Oscar® submission.
