BREAKFAST ON PLUTO Special Screenings

The latest from consummate Irish director Neil Jordan, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO tells the story, in 36 short chapters, of Patrick “Kitten” Braden (Cillian Murphy) a cheeky and flamboyant transvestite whose tale begins when she is abandoned at birth by his mother, about whom she knows little, except that she is a dead ringer for Mitzi Gaynor.

Thanks to kindness and encouragement from a local priest (Liam Neeson), Kitten’s’ lifelong search for her birth mother begins. From the turbulent Ireland of the ’60s and dangerous brushes with the Irish Republican Army, into London of the ’70s (the soundtrack and art design wonderfully evoke the period with vivid glitter-glam detail Kitten has random encounters with a john (a delightful cameo from Bryan Ferry) and an eccentric magician (played by Jordan regular Stephen Rea), before eventually finds solace in a steamy Soho nightspot.

But the highlight of BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is undoubtedly Cillian Murphy who, in a no-holds-barred performance as Kitten Braden with her pouty lips and. breathy sassy seems all the while blissfully immune to-even amused by-the predators and pitfalls on the path of life.
