There’s a point where permanent optimism becomes something darker, something pathological. Jan, a controlling restaurant manager, is the type of fellow who could put a positive spin on eternal damnation and might well twist off his own head before admitting that he – or anyone else, ever – had done something wrong. The rollicking black comedy WITH YOUR PERMISSION pits Jan’s sunny denial against the equally powerful despair wielded by his wife Benti, a frustrated opera singer whose volcanic rage is the cause of her husband’s frequent ‘accidents.’ Director Paprika Steen, the actress who shined in many of the early DOGMA 95 films, gives her talented cast free reign to explore the hilarious range of their character’s bad behavior, while never forgetting their humanity. The result is a full-bore triumph, a feat of cinematic alchemy that transforms depression, abuse and hatred into happiness, laughter and love.
