GLORIA World Cinema

Director Sebastián Lelio’s fourth feature film is an intimate portrait of social life in contemporary Chile as seen through the character study of a unique woman who seizes control of her own reality and achieves self-reliance with dignity and elegance. Gloria Cumplido is the woman – a confident, divorced mother of two in her late 50s. At night, she transforms into a flirt and dominates the nightclub dance floor in search of more than just companionship. She meets Rodolfo, a wealthy ex-naval officer, who represents excitement and hope for real romance. Overwhelmed by Rodolfo’s emotional baggage and his co-dependence on his children and ex-wife, the relationship quickly disintegrates and culminates in devastating humiliation. Winner of the Silver Bear at the 2013 Berlinale for her honest and intrepid performance, Paulina Garcia radiantly guides the fragile and fierce Gloria as she faces the truths of aging in her comical yet powerful journey of personal evolution.

Sebastián Lelio was born in Santiago, Chile. His first feature was the award-winning LA SAGRADA FAMILIA (2006), followed by NAVIDAD (2009) and EL AÑO DEL TIGRE (2011). Recently, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and obtained the support of DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm for the development of new projects.
