SELF MADE (BOREG) New Auteurs

In SELF MADE, Israeli director Shira Geffen unites Sarah Adler (ANA ARABIA, MARIE ANTOINETTE) with newcomer Samira Saraya in a charming story of exchanged identities. Adler plays conceptual artist Michal, who loses her memory when a bed she bought — from the Ikea-like factory where Saraya’s character works — breaks and knocks her on the head. Although one woman is Israeli and the other Palestinian, they cross paths at a border checkpoint, precipitating a magical identity exchange which further muddies the cross currents of their lives. This surreal comedy provides a much needed female interior perspective on a controversial situation.

Shira Geffen was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1971. She and her husband, Etgar Keret, co-wrote and co-directed their debut feature, JELLYFISH, in 2007; it won the Caméra d’Or at the 2007 Cannes Critics’ Week. Her latest film, SELF MADE, played at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
