SONG OF THE SEA World Cinema

In this Irish hand-animated fantasy by Tomm Moore (THE SECRET OF KELLS), Ben and his silent younger sister Saoirse lose their mother when she disappears one night into the sea. Their father is so saddened by the loss that the two children are sent to live with their grandmother in the city, their only possession a shell flute given to them by their mother. They soon realize the flute will guide them on a journey through fairylands and ancient seas to uncover a family secret: They are connected to the selkies, mythical creatures that live as humans when on land and as seals in the sea. SONG OF THE SEA is a beautiful adventure that captures the imagination of young and old, and an original journey that doesn’t conform to the traditional formulas of children’s animation.

Born in Northern Ireland, Tomm Moore studied animation at Ballyfermot College in Dublin. He co-founded the animation studio Cartoon Saloon, and in 2009 co-directed THE SECRET OF KELLS, which was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar® and a European Film Award.
