CHEVALIER World Cinema

While on a fishing trip in the Aegean Sea, six men decide to play “Chevalier,” a game that measures every aspect of who they are. Things will be compared. Blood will be spilled and tested. At the end of the game, one man will emerge as the best and receive a signet ring as a trophy of his accomplishment. With her third feature, Athina Rachel Tsangari (ATTENBERG, AFI FEST 2011) is further confirmed as a master of the Greek cinema new wave, with a cleverly written script by Tsangari and co-writer Efthimis Filippou (ALPS, AFI FEST ‘11, and this year’s THE LOBSTER) that is an acute and humorous study of male egotism. CHEVALIER is an absurdist farce that explores the competitiveness of male relationships as could only be observed by a female auteur. –Jenn Murphy

Originally from Greece, Athina Rachel Tsangari attended New York University before receiving an M.F.A. in film production at the University of Texas. She has made three features: THE SLOW BUSINESS OF GOING; ATTENBERG (AFI FEST 2010); and CHEVALIER, which was nominated for the Golden Leopard at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival.
