TALE OF TALES (IL RACCONTO DEI RACCONTI) World Cinema

Matteo Garrone’s TALE OF TALES is a collection of three ancient Italian fairy tales, all intertwined and illustrated with a blazing cinematic style that brings these unusual stories to the screen for the first time. A flea grown to enormous size, a king who fights a sea serpent for fertility, an old woman who seduces an oligarch, magical twins, a princess won by an ogre and many things in between all make appearances in this magical film. Garrone returns to AFI FEST for a third time (GOMMORAH, AFI FEST 2008; REALITY, AFI FEST 2012), here with a star-studded international cast set against the backdrop of some of Italy’s most incredible castles and natural wonders. — Lane Kneedler
