THE DAY AFTER (GEU-HU) World Cinema

Premiering in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the second Hong Sang-soo feature at the festival this year reteams Hong with actors Kwon Haehyo (YOURSELF AND YOURS, AFI FEST 2016) and Kim Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN; AFI FEST 2015). Kim plays Areum, an aspiring writer whose first day at a publishing company is marred by the spectacle of her philandering boss Bongwon’s personal life. Bongwon, played by Kwon, has recently broken up with a former employee whom Areum is replacing. When Bongwon’s wife shows up at the office to confront the pair, she mistakes Areum for the other woman. Hong’s signature style of circular storytelling works to great effect in this relationship drama that is infused with realism and humor. – Jenn Murphy
