VARDA BY AGNÈS Cinema's Legacy

VARDA BY AGNÈS

Talent attending: Mathieu Demy (Representative)

Concluding a series of insightful personal documentaries by French New Wave pioneer Agnès Varda, this personally guided cinematic tour became a poetic memorial to a colossal career when the 90-year-old artist died one month following its 2019 Berlinale premiere. Finding humor in the unexpected and beauty even in sadness, Varda’s ruminations on aging and mortality, delightfully unabashed feminism and enthusiastic interest in others paint a vibrant self-portrait of the legendary filmmaker and her particular mode of seeing. A perceptive reflection on art and life – positively in love with both – this captivating exploration incorporates Varda’s documentary and fiction work, installations and photography, offering original concepts and anecdotes that will enrich their impact to those familiar and provide a welcome introduction to the uninitiated. –Malin Kan
