MS SLAVIC 7

Talent attending: Sofia Bohdanowicz (Director)

Indiscriminately housed in the Harvard Houghton Library is a collection of elegantly composed letters exchanged between Nobel Prize-nominated author Jozef Wittlin and poet Zofia Bohdanowiczowa, retrievable using call number MS Slavic 7. The correspondence extends decades following their displacement from Poland during World War II but, consisting of only 25 letters, there is little actual information about their relationship. After discovering the existence of the collection, Bohdanowiczowa’s granddaughter – Deragh Campbell in one of two dynamic performances at AFI FEST 2019 – is determined to investigate but, in her research, confronts unanticipated obstacles. In this deceptively light comedy of errors, a clever minimalist aesthetic prods at the institutional barriers that leave archival access and historical interpretation the domain of a privileged class of academics. –Malin Kan
