TURN EVERY PAGE – THE ADVENTURES OF ROBERT CARO AND ROBERT GOTTLIEB

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Lizzie Gottlieb.

In 2020, when the media landscape was overtaken by Zoom, providing a privileged peek inside pundit and celebrity homes, perched atop book piles, carefully situated within the frame, invariably, there was Robert Caro’s name. Though these heavy tomes have become status symbols of the well-read, this remarkable new documentary is a loving tribute to the two titans of contemporary publishing behind them, Caro and his prolific editor Robert Gottlieb, as well as a deep dive into the books themselves. From an as-intimate-as-possible perspective of the intensely private author and his editor, director (and Gottlieb’s daughter) Lizzie Gottlieb provides an engaging overview of Caro’s research and investigations, teasing a glimpse inside the pairs’ typewriter-and-carbon-paper mediated final collaboration – the fifth volume of THE YEARS OF LYNDON JOHNSON –  and shares their heated arguments over commas and semicolon placement, not to mention a tour of Robert Gottlieb’s famed plastic purse collection. –Malin Kan
