REAS Documentary

REAS

In her sophomore documentary feature, Argentinian filmmaker Lola Arias (THEATRE OF WAR) continues to explore themes of collective memory, cathartic expression and healing through reenactments of shared trauma. Centered on a vibrant, varied group of former Buenos Aires inmates all performing as themselves, REAS is a unique combination of hybrid documentary and prison musical. Fronted by the gentle Yoseli, who dreams of Paris, and the charming Nacho, who starts a rock band in jail, each convict takes turns singing tunes and reconstructing memories that express the invasive, dehumanizing experience of being behind bars. With a visually arresting style and singular approach that features plenty of voguing, REAS portrays the camaraderie and deeply felt bonds between fellow inmates, as well as the empowerment gained through owning and telling your story. –Julia Kipnis
