NOWHERE TO LAY MY EYES

This film screens with THE DAY SHE RETURNS as a double feature of Hong Sang-soo’s latest works.

Estranged from her mother for nearly a decade, Sanghee (Kim Min-hee) takes a rare trip to a blustery Jeju Island for a long-awaited visit. A snack importer and experimental filmmaker, Sanghee is something of a disappointment to her mother (Choi Myung-gil) who would much rather she join the family business and help out at her restaurant and inn. Accompanied by her favored brother (Shin Seok-ho), she suffers through awkward meals, struggling to connect with her new stepfather (Kwon Hae-hyo), a documentary filmmaker, and his eager daughter (Park Mi-so), an enthusiastic fan of Sanghee’s short YouTube films. As with the best of prolific Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo’s work, this intimate family drama finds subtle humor and deep meaning in revelatory conversations about family, artistic principles and the fleeting nature of mortality. Hong won Best Director at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival with Kim deservedly winning the Best Actress prize for her deceptively simple but emotionally resonant performance. –Josh Gardner
