ROCKS

Talent attending: Theresa Ikoko (Writer)

In east London, teenager Shola is known as “Rocks” after protecting her childhood friend from bullies. Rocks has big dreams, loves makeup and enjoys hanging out with her diverse, all-girl crew after school. One day she returns home from school to discover her life radically altered: her troubled, single mother has disappeared, leaving her responsible for younger brother Emmanuel. Resilient, Rocks takes it in stride. But as money runs out and fears of foster care sink in, she pushes away help from her friends and community.

Emerging from a collaborative process and workshops with female youth, director Sarah Gavon crafts an authentic, compassionate and multi-dimensional portrait of girlhood. ROCKS’s realist style and layered approach delivers one of the most dynamic films from this year’s Toronto International Film Festival Platform section. –Sarah Harris

Sarah Gavron is a British director known for the feature films BRICK LANE (2007), which earned her a BAFTA nomination, and SUFFRAGETTE (2015). ROCKS (2019) is her third feature film.
