ANTIGONE

CANADA OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM OSCAR® SUBMISSION

Talent attending: Sophie Deraspe (Director)

Antigone is a straight-A student who represents her immigrant family’s best hopes for leaving behind a traumatic past and achieving a bright future in its adopted country of Canada. After a controversial police shooting that leaves one brother dead and another imprisoned, she finds herself having to make sudden and life-changing choices. Will she sacrifice all for her family? Should one be more loyal to the past than to one’s own future? Québécois writer director Sophie Deraspe, taking inspiration from Sophocles’ tragedy “Antigone,” crafts an original and propulsive drama that forgoes easy choices and stubbornly defies categorization. Awarded Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival, ANTIGONE features a powerful performance by Nahéma Ricci in her first leading role. –Ken Jacobson
