HELLION (2014) Guest Artistic Director

HELLION (2014)

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Kat Candler and actor Josh Wiggins.

Featuring remarkably nuanced, heart-wrenching performances, this vérité-style drama set in southeastern Texas follows motocross-obsessed 13-year-old Jacob Wilson, in a breakout performance from Josh Wiggins, whose behavior becomes increasingly delinquent after the death of his mother. When Child Protective Services places his little brother with their aunt (Juliette Lewis), Jacob and his emotionally absent father (Aaron Paul) struggle to take responsibility for their actions and to support one another, which they will need to do in order to bring Wes home.

Kat Candler’s award-winning feature HELLION starring Aaron Paul and Juliette Lewis, played in competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Her short films HELLION and BLACK METAL both premiered at Sundance. Candler’s work in television includes directing nine episodes of Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s highly acclaimed QUEEN SUGAR. She’s directed episodes of 13 REASONS WHY, SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS starring Elizabeth Olsen, three episodes of the Apple + show HOME BEFORE DARK, DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY, TRUTH BE TOLD and the pilot for the CW drama THE REPUBLIC OF SARAH. She oversaw Season 2 of QUEEN SUGAR as the producing director, Season 3 as the Showrunner and Season 3 of 13 REASONS WHY as the Consulting Producer.  She’s currently developing a TV series inspired by the 2005 film LORDS OF DOGTOWN produced by Shawn Ryan, Marney Hochman and MiddKidd Productions. She’s also developing a romantic drama series with Ava DuVernay, Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff and starring Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff for Starz.
